Muscular Dystrophy Fundraiser
Muscular dystrophy, which causes progressive muscle weakness and wasting and has no known cure, affects around 30,000 people in the UK. The Muscular Dystrophy Campaign is the only UK charity which focuses on all muscular dystrophies and has pioneered the search for treatments and cures for over forty years.
Callum Couston (20) from Glasgow and his family have been members of the Muscular Dystrophy campaign for four years and regularly take part in fundraising events to help the charity.
Callum’s sister, Eilean Stewart, suffers from limb girdle MD, which causes degeneration of the muscles at the top of the arms and legs, meaning getting around is a problem.
Eilean explains: “Stairs are very difficult for me and I usually have to get taxis when I want to go out. I can’t really go out whenever I want and I have to plan ahead, which gets me down.”
Callum joined eight other MD Campaign members to raise money to help sufferers like his sister. The challenge was not for the faint hearted and involved abseiling down one of the towers of the famous Forth Rail Bridge, near Edinburgh.
“I didn’t realise how high I really had to jump from until the last minute," recalls Callum.
"I was quite scared at first but once I got going it was such a rush. I had great fun and was able to raise a lot of money to go towards research into Muscular Dystrophy,” he added.
Allied Vehicles was delighted to support Callum's brave effort and to contribute to the MD fundraising campign.
